Sports Injury Treatment in Cardiff

Whether you run, lift, play rugby or football, or just enjoy staying active, an injury can be frustrating. It can stop you training, knock your confidence and affect everyday life too.

At ADT Chiropractic, our Cardiff chiropractors work with active people of all levels, from weekend runners to competitive athletes. We find out what has been injured and why it happened. We then build a clear plan to ease your pain, rebuild strength and get you back to your sport safely.

"The better your body can handle load, the less likely you are to get hurt."

What causes sports injuries?

Most sports injuries happen when the load on a muscle, tendon or joint is more than it is ready to handle. That might be a sudden event, or something that builds up over weeks.

Common types include:

  • Muscle strains – such as hamstring, calf or groin strains

  • Ligament sprains – such as a rolled ankle

  • Tendon pain – such as Achilles, knee or elbow tendon problems that build up over time

  • Back and neck injuries – from lifting, tackling, twisting or contact

  • Joint pain – in the knees, hips or shoulders from repetitive movement

Things that commonly contribute:

  • Increasing training too quickly

  • Not enough recovery between sessions

  • Poor technique, or lifting without bracing

  • Old injuries that never fully recovered

  • Stiffness or weakness elsewhere in the body putting extra strain on the injured area

How we can help

We don't just treat the injured area. We look at how your whole body is moving and what may have led to the injury. Your plan usually combines:

  • Spinal and joint adjustments to free up stiff, restricted joints

  • Soft tissue therapy and massage to ease muscle tension

  • Progressive rehabilitation exercises to rebuild strength and confidence

  • A clear return-to-sport plan, with advice on training load and recovery

Your first visit

Your new patient consultation lasts up to 60 minutes and costs £60. It includes:

  1. A full case history: your injury, health, training and lifestyle

  2. A physical, orthopaedic and neurological examination

  3. A clear explanation of what we think is going on

  4. Your first treatment where appropriate, and a plan for what comes next

Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes and cost £42.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the injury and your goals. Minor strains often settle within a few weeks, while longer-standing or more complex injuries can take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline at your first visit and review your progress regularly.

What you can do in the meantime

  • Ease off, don't stop. Reduce or modify training rather than stopping all activity.

  • Keep moving the injured area gently within a comfortable range.

  • Avoid movements or activities that cause sharp pain or make it worse.

  • Build back gradually rather than jumping straight back to full training.

When to get urgent help

Go to A&E or a minor injuries unit if you have:

  • A suspected broken bone, an obvious deformity or a joint that looks out of place

  • Rapid, severe swelling after an injury

  • You can't put any weight on your leg or move the injured joint

  • A head injury with confusion, drowsiness, vomiting, memory loss or worsening headache

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us. We will let you know if we think you need to see your GP or another specialist as well.

Do you only treat athletes?

Not at all. We see everyone from elite players to people who've just started running or going to the gym.

Can I keep training while I'm injured?

Often yes, with changes. We'll show you what you can safely keep doing so you stay active while you recover.

How do I stop it happening again?

Getting your body used to the demands of your sport is key. That's why strength work and smart training advice are a core part of every plan.
